20% of young kids 'given glasses
unnecessarily'
The Singapore Straits Times,
25th June 2004, reported that a study published in the
Journal of American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology
and Strabismus on preschool vision screening examined the
records of more than 100,000 children 20% were found to have
no eye problems and were prescribed glasses unnecessarily.
Mr Donahue an associate professor
at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, added that most
youngster are slightly far-sighted, but are likely to grow
out of the condition without glasses.
He was also
critical of the screening program which requires undergo
comprehensive eye exams before starting school. He said the
rule was costly given the unnecessary
expense incurred due to high rate of misdiagnosis. Then....Why
are we putting glasses on children who are only 6 months
old?
Send me your comments and suggestions we can do to improve
the situation and our children's eyesight.
